The third edition of Cinepolitica International Film Festival starts on Tuesday, April 8th, at 8pm, at Cinema Studio, with the national premiere of the film Diplomacy, directed by Volker Schlöndorff. The Opening Ceremony will be presented by television anchor Cătălin Ștefănescu.
Up until April 13th, at Studio, Elvire Popesco & Union Cinemas we will screen over 20 powerful films, on current political topics, some of which have been submitted or nominated for the Academy Awards. Special guests Serge Avedikian, winner of a Palme d’Or for Chienne d’histoire and star of Paradjanov, as well as Romanian journalist Cristian Tudor Popescu, will give master classes on the influence of politics and censorship in cinema. Having its world premiere in Berlin this year, Diplomacy addresses a key moment in the history of Paris: on Hitler’s orders, the Nazi general Dietrich von Choltitz is preparing to blow they city up before the army leaves. The Swedish consul Raoul Nordling tries to convince him of the absurdity of the plan. In the main roles, two of the stars of European cinema: Neils Arestrup and André Dussollier. Volker Schlöndorff is one of the most celebrated German directors. With his adaptation of The Tin Drum (1979), based on the novel by Günter Grass, he won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Eight strong films are competing for the Cinepolitica 2014 Trophy. The Competition screenings debut on Wednesday, April 9th, at 6pm, at Studio Cinema, with Occupation, the 27th Picture, by Pavo Marinović, a portrait-documentary about a filmmaker from ex-Yugoslavia whom, after the fall of Communism, becomes completely shunned by the new goverment, which deems him a traitor and forces him to emmigrate.
From 8pm, at Studio Cinema, the long-awaited The Square, nominated this year for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, will be screened in premiere. Jehane Noujaim’s documentary depicts the changes in Egypt’s society in recent years, since the Arab Spring, with the help of the moving personal stories of a few protesters from the Tahrir Square.
Also on Wednesday, but at Union Cinema, from 6pm, the French filmmaker of Armenian origin Serge Avedikian, winner of the Palme d’Or for Chienne d’histoire, co-director, along with Olena Fetisova, and main star of Paradjanov (in premiere at Cinepolitica on Thursday, from 8pm, at Cinema Studio), will talk about “Ideological Censorship and Economic Censorship in Cinema”.
After the master class and debate, from 8pm, at Union will start a film from the subsection Eye on Films, the menacing Policeman, by Nadav Lapid. Selected in over 40 festivals and winner of the Special Award of the Jury in Locarno, in 2011, Policeman is the drama of a soldier from the Israeli elite anti-terrorism unit whose beliefs are shaken when he encounters a radical and extremely violent street group.
Eye on Films is a unique global network of film professionals which guarantees the circulation of productions by debuting filmmakers – at their 1st and/or 2nd feature film – in festivals, in cinemas, on television and other platforms.
Organized by the Association for Culture and Image, Cinepolitica International Film Festival is endorsed by the National University of Theatre and Film “I.L. Caragiale” (UNATC) and the National University of Arts (UNArte). The event is supported by the National Cinema Centre (CNC).
