Synopsis:

In the night of August 24 to 25, 1944, the fate of the City of Lights is in the hands of Wermacht general Dietrich von Cholitz, Governor of the Greater Paris. Acting on Hitler’s orders, he is ready to blow up the entire city in order to delay the inevitable: the advance of the Allied troops to German soil and the end of WWII. Despite the million-and-a-half human casualties and the destruction of an invaluable cultural heritage, the Nazi general shows no sign of hesitation: the orders are to be carried out. Paris seems lost, until Raoul Nordling, the Consul of Sweden, shows up uninvited in von Cholitz’s hotel room. A career diplomat, he takes it upon himself to save a metropolis, and a human conscience as well.

Director:

Volker Schlöndorff

A graduate of political science at the Sorbonne in Paris, Volker Schlöndorff meets Louis Malle as a cinema student at the Institute for Advanced Cinematographic Studies. The master chooses him as assistant director for ZAZIE IN THE METRO. He works alongside Alain Resnais and Jean-Pierre Melville. He makes his feature debut with YOUNG TÖRLESS, a Louis Malle produced film based on a novel by Robert Musil, which earns him the FIPRESCI Award at Cannes. The box-office success of THE LOST HONOR OF KATHARINA BLUM makes him the most prominent member of the New German Cinema movement. He wins both the Golden Palm and the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award for THE TIN DRUM. After more than ten years on American soil, he returns to Germany with THE OGRE, an unofficial sequel of THE TIN DRUM, with John Malkovich playing the lead.
