Cinepolitica Weekend: Adelin Petrișor and North Korea; the “Drug Company Genocide”.

A meeting with Adelin Petrișor and his stories from North Korea, a ravaging documentary about “drug company genocide” and a blockbuster with Adrien Brody, during the closing of the festival, are just a few of the not to be missed event during the weekend, at Cinepolitica International Film Festival.
 

One of the most famous Romanian reporters, Adelin Petrişor, will present on Saturday, April 12th, from 8:30pm, at Elvire Popesco Cinema, his documentary North Korea – Nothing to Envy, made after his visit to the toughest communist concentration camp still existing in the world – North Korea – together with his colleague from TVR, the cameraman Cătălin Popescu. The two were the first Romanian TV journalists to be allowed access to the isolated country isolated after 1989. Entry is free of charge, subject to availability!
 
In the same programme, North and South, we will also screen on Saturday, at Elvire Popesco, from 6:30pm, National Security / Namyeong-dong 1985, by Chung Ji-Young, the drama of a leader of the Democratic movement in South Korea, who was tortured in order to confess his collaboration with the Communists from the North.
 

Stunning documentary Fire in the Blood, about the “drug company genocide”, goes on screen on Saturday, at 6pm, at Studio Cinema. Between 1997 and 2003, the decision of a few of the biggest Western pharmaceutical companies to withdraw anti-AIDS drugs caused 10 million deaths in Africa and Asia. The film is directed by Dylan Mohan Gray and narrated by William Hurt.
 
The next screening on Saturday, at Studio Cinema, from 8pm, is the premiere of the Nigerian film Half of a Yellow Sun, directed by Biyi Bandele. Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, the actor nominated this year for the Academy Award for his role in 12 Years a Slave, and the actress Thandie Newton (Crash), the film is an emotional love story about a few young people who were caught in the midst of the Civil War in Nigeria. From the Competition you can also see reruns of Neighbouring Sounds / O Som ao Redor (2pm) and the film on Josef Mengele, The German Doctor / Wakolda (4pm).
 
At Elvire Popesco Cinema, on Saturday, from 1pm, Cinepolitica audiences can see the first documentary which managed to permeate the crude world of the identification and expulsion centres in Italy – EU 013, the Last Frontier / EU 013, L’Ultima frontiera (2013), by Alessio Genovese. From 2:30pm, in the Eye on Films programme, we will learn about how politics follow us everywhere, even in bed, in Left Over – Intimate Politics / Doutes – Chronique du sentiment politique, directed by Yamini Lila Kumar.
 
From 4pm, at Elvire Popesco Cinema, 100 years after the beginning of the First World War, we will screen one of the masterpieces of classic cinema, Grand Illusion / La Grande illusion (1937), directed by Jean Renoir, starring Jean Gabin. 
 

The third edition of Cinepolitica ends on Sunday, April 13th, from 8pm, at Studio Cinema, with the Award Ceremony, followed by the screening of Back to 1942 / Yi jiu si er, China’s submission for the Academy Awards this year. The epic historical production, directed by the filmmaker often referred to as “the Spielberg of China”, Feng Xiaogang, recounts a dark chapter from China’s past when, during the war against Japan, a terrible famine took its toll on the Henan province, causing millions of deaths.

Organized by the Association for Culture and Image, Cinepolitica International Film Festival is endorsed by the National University of Theatre and Film “I.L. Caragiale” (UNATC) and the National University of Arts (UNArte). The event is supported by the National Cinema Centre (CNC).
